Hello, I'm Katie

I have been tutoring science and maths for over 4 years now, since finishing Durham university where I studied biomedical science.

I enjoy helping other students learn and reach their potential, whilst trying to make the process more enjoyable.

For those students preparing for exams I understand how tricky and stressful they can be. I want to help students feel more prepared, so they can sit their exams feeling more confident and calm.

My Experience as a Tutor

I have over 5000 hours of tutoring experience spanning a range of levels, be that children all the way to A level. In this time I tutored for a company (Mytutor) and gained over 236 5 Star reviews. I have also tutored for tutorful and have gained 26 5 star reviews. You can see both my profiles on theses websites on the links below:

How I Tutor

My lessons are conducted over zoom.  I find that zoom is one of the best platforms to tutor on as it has all the tools I need. Including:

  • The ability to screen share

  • Students can annotate on the screen

  • Remote control - very useful for interactive activities

  • Ability to record lessons (if required)

The Lesson

While the lessons are tailed to each individual student and how they lean best, I do usually follow a general lesson plan:Which involves:

Reviewing the previous lesson and going over homework

Looking into the specification for the chosen topic.PowerPoint going through what a student needs to know with clear explanations of concepts using diagrams/pictures and detailed notes, which can be referred to later for revision. Throughout I interact with the students and answer any questions they might have, as well as quizzing them on certain areas to check their understanding, alongside having more enjoyable whiteboard activities.

Exam questions towards the end, which the student attempts to answer before I mark and give advice on how to improve their approach and gain higher marks, or explaining concepts again if needed.

Finally, I review the lesson with the student to see how hard they found it, what they found most difficult and need more work on and what they feel more confident in.

Homework

I like to set a variety of homework tasks to help the student understand and remember what we went through in the lesson. This will be set through the google classroom.

Homework can involve:

  • Worksheets/Exam Style questions (for higher years) which will be marked and gone over at the start of the next lesson.

  • Sometimes the homework may be more creative, such as making revision posters to solidify knowledge.

  • Watching recommended videos

  • Playing educational online games linked to the lesson.

  • Interactive online quizzes through google classroom, which I will be able to see the mark for, and specific questions attempted.

  • Every few lessons I set timed tests to assess a students progress, where I analyse their results to identify their strengths, weaknesses and where they improved.
